Navajo Council weighing fixes to fit fewer members

Window Rock, Arizona (AP) April 2011

The Navajo Nation Council is gathering in Window Rock to consider revisions to tribal law that would accommodate fewer council members.

Navajos voted overwhelmingly to reduce the number of lawmakers from 88 to 24 in a special election in 2009.

The lawmakers were seated in January and have proposed a structure that cuts the number of council committees and allows for public input on legislation.

The tribe’s Judicial Branch has cautioned that revisions can be temporary only. The high court says only the Navajo people have the right to make fundamental changes to the government structure.
