Bodies of Kiowa Chief's family recoverd from river 8-07

By SEAN MURPHY

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP/ICC) – Two people drowned and the bodies of three women were recovered after heavy rain and high winds from a tropical storm moved through Oklahoma, flooding homes and roads and knocking out power to thousands of residents.

In nearby Carnegie, the wife, daughter and granddaughter of Kiowa Chief Billy Horse were recovered after their vehicle was swept from State Highway 58 about 12:30 a.m., said Richard Kauahquo, a member of the tribe’s business committee.

The bodies were found the evening of August 19 still inside the van, which was in a large pond about a quarter of a mile west of State Highway 58 near Carnegie, said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Kera Philippi.

“There was rushing water on the roadway, about 3 feet deep, but on the surface it was calm,” Philippi said. “There were two eyewitnesses that saw the vehicle get swept away.”

Dorita Horse, 77, Helen Horse, 34, and Rose Saddleblanket, 17, were driving from Lawton when their car was swept from the road by rising floodwaters, Kauahquo said.

“The current must have grabbed them,” Billy Horse told The Oklahoman. “We saw them go off the road, and float away like a boat."

“We didn’t see them after that.”

Horse told reporters he contemplated a dive into the water before realizing there was no way he could reach them without becoming a victim himself.

Billy and Dorita Horse reportedly have 11 children.
