Obama orders Navajo water project expedited

Gallup, New Mexico (AP) October 2011

The Obama Administration has ordered regulators to speed up the permitting process for the Navajo Gallup Water Supply Project.

The project, which will deliver clean water to the reservation through 280 miles of pipeline, was one of 14 projects the administration selected for expedited review as part of the president’s effort to more quickly approve job-creating infrastructure projects.

This project will build two water treatment plants, 24 pumping plants, and numerous water regulation and storage facilities to bring a clean and sustainable water supply to the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico.

Under the order announced, the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation will work to improve coordination between Federal and non-federal entities and to expedite land acquisition for the project.
