Narragansett to hold tribal elections Oct. 27

Charlestown, Rhode Island (AP)

A former councilwoman of the Narragansett Tribe will seek the top leadership post in upcoming tribal elections.

Paulla Dove Jennings plans to run for chief sachem of the tribe. She will face incumbent chief Matthew Thomas in the elections Oct. 27.

Thomas has been chief sachem since 1997. He plans to seek another term because he says there are still goals he’d like to accomplish.

Thomas and six other Narragansetts are awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges related to a 2003 state police raid on a tribal smoke shop.

Jennings once served as the tribe’s business manager and was a councilwoman in the late 1980s. She says she’d like to restore membership rights to people who have been removed from the rolls.

The elections are scheduled for Oct. 27.
