Former Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Chairman Ernest House Sr. is once again leader of the southwestern Colorado tribe.

House won the chairmanship with 318 votes, beating incumbent chairman Manual Heart who earned 278 votes in the mid-October election. House had been on hiatus after serving 10 years as Tribal Council chairman, three years as treasurer and another as secretary-custodian.

House’s grandfather, Jack House, was the last Ute chief, while Ernest’s father, Thomas House, served on the council in the 1960s.

As part of his campaign, House touted some of his past accomplishments, which included developing a casino on tribal land, which is in the Four Corners area.
