Shoshone-Bannock tribes signs fuel tax agreement

Boise, Idaho (AP) 10-07

Idaho and Shoshone-Bannock tribal officials during October signed an agreement requiring gasoline sold on the Fort Hall reservation be taxed at 25 cents a gallon, the same rate as elsewhere in the state.

The pact is similar to one Idaho signed last week with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe requiring the tribes to spend the money on transportation needs.

In the latest settlement, it also allows Idaho to collect between $800,000 and $1 million in annual taxes from diesel fuel that long-haul truckers fill up with when driving through Fort Hall.

Idaho says it will use most of that money for state transportation needs.

The agreements end years of disputes over who is entitled to tax revenue from tribal gas sales.

The state is still negotiating a separate agreement with the Nez Perce Tribe and hopes to be done by a Dec. 1 deadline.
