The chief counsel for the Navajo Nation’s legislative branch has resigned after five years on the job.

Navajo Council Speaker Lawrence Morgan says it’s with regret and respect that he announces Raymond Etcitty’s resignation.

Etcitty says he submitted his resignation March 21. He says the job was highly political and that the speaker and the Tribal Council had been discussing his future.

Etcitty is now the general counsel for the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise, which was established by the council to oversee the development of casinos on the sprawling reservation.

Etcitty is busy making sure the Gaming Enterprise has all of its contracts and other legal documents in place as it prepared to open the Navajo Nation’s first casino near Gallup this fall.
