Ex-tribal treasurer gets home jail, restitution

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (AP) 8-08

The former treasurer of a district on the Standing Rock Reservation accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the tribe must repay some of the money and serve six months of home confinement.

Renee Yellow Earrings, 51, of Bullhead was also sentenced in federal court to five years of probation. She was ordered to pay restitution of $15,701.

Between February 2004 and June 2007, Yellow Earrings was the treasurer of the Rock Creek District and wrote checks to herself and family members totaling $1,000 to $30,000, some of which were fraudulent, according to a court document.

She was one of the district representatives but received more than 10 times the amount of compensation as any other district member, prosecutors said.
