San Diego intertribal court moves to Rincon

Valley Center, California (AP) 8-08

The Intertribal Court of Southern California has moved to the Rincon Indian Reservation in northern San Diego County.

The 3-year-old court, which had been housed in an Escondido office building, handles land and domestic disputes for 10 San Diego County tribes. Retired Superior Court Commissioner Anthony Brandenburg is the intertribal judge.

Law enforcement agencies such as the sheriff’s department have jurisdiction over criminal matters.

Court administrator Temet Aguilar says the intertribal court move into a 2,000-square-foot facility is a sign the tribes are “entering into the modern era of their development by exercising their sovereignty.”
