Officers reassigned on reservation

Pine Ridge, South Dakota (AP) 8-08

Tribal game wardens have been pressed into police duty on the Pine Ridge Reservation to help deal with the resignation of nearly 30 police officers.

The cops quit because of long working hours and reassigned positions.

Tribal President John Yellow Bird Steele blames a lack of federal money to operate an adequate police force.

He says federal budget reductions have cut the force in half.

Tribal officials met with disgruntled police officers Aug. 12 and the session got heated, resulting in a scuffle and prompting the FBI to send some agents to keep an eye on things.
