Grand Forks police get new patches

Grand Forks police officers will be sporting new shoulder patches on their uniforms this fall.

The new logo resembles the Grand Forks city flag, with river banks, a stalk of wheat and a red feather.

Police Capt. Mike Kirby says the background of the patch is black in memory of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Kirby says the use of a single feather, commonly associated with American Indian cultures, came after consultation with the Native American community.

The patch will start showing up on police uniforms in mid-October. It will replace two versions of an eagle patch in use since 1964.
