Fire burns mobile homes on California reservation 5-14-07

THERMAL, Calif. (AP) - A blaze at a trailer park on reservation land destroyed six mobile homes Monday and severely damaged two others before firefighters were able to contain it, officials said.

The fire started just before 1 p.m. at a mobile home park on the Torres Martinez Indian Reservation about 140 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Another 120 trailers - about one-third of the park - were evacuated, said Cheri Patterson, a spokeswoman for Riverside County Fire Department.

Eight engines and 30 firefighters responded, she said. No injuries were reported.

Fire Capt. Greg Everhart said the layout of the park, which is notorious for its crowded and unsanitary conditions, made it difficult to fight the blaze.

“It is a close quarters mobile home park and with the winds blowing, if one mobile home goes up it will probably take out several others,” he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Everhart said.
