Palin points new subsistence director

Juneau, Alaska (AP) 10-08

A former director of the Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments and a state game board member will head up a state agency on subsistence hunting and fishing.

Craig Fleener, an Alaska Native, was selected Oct. 14 by Gov. Sarah Palin to replace Elizabeth Andrews as director of fish and game’s subsistence division. Andrews retired in July.

Fleener will resign from his seat on the game board. He was appointed last February after a controversy arose over the governor’s original choice of a non-Native, who also was not from an area off the road system, to fill a position being vacated by an Alaska Native.

The Division of Subsistence conducts research on customary and traditional uses of subsistence foods in rural Alaska. The information is used in providing fishing and hunting opportunities for rural Alaskans.
