Political dispute among Hopi leadership heats up

A political dispute among leaders of the Hopi tribe has become even more heated, with some council members convincing a judge to issue an arrest warrant for the chairman.

Chairman Ben Nuvamsa, who was suspended by the Tribal Council during September, says he will file a motion to quash the warrant.

He says he’s committed no crime.

Under the resolution that suspended Nuvamsa’s authority as chairman, he was to surrender tribal property issued to him.

Tribal prosecutor Jeffrey Porturica says he’s failed to do so. Nuvamsa is charged with violating a tribal resolution and failure to obey a lawful court order.

Nuvamsa has asked a judge to overturn his suspension. He contends the meeting in which the suspension was voted on was illegal.
