Montana State Indian Affairs director leaving 6-2-07

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Reno Charette, the state director of Indian Affairs, is leaving to take a job at Montana State University-Billings, Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Friday.

Major Robinson, an economic development specialist in Schweitzer's office, will temporarily fill the position until a new hire is made.

“Reno has been a great asset to the team,” Schweitzer said. “I am looking forward to working with her in her new role at MSU-Billings.”

Charette accepted the position of Coordinator for Native American Programs at MSU-Billings. In partnership with tribes, MSU-B and other area agencies, she will provide vision, planning, development, and establishment of a Native American Institute at Montana State University-Billings. She will also teach, obtain funding resources, and coordinate the development of a Native American Studies major.

Robinson, 48, will serve as the interim Director of Indian Affairs. He is a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and has worked in the field of project development and construction for 18 years. Most recently, he worked as the construction project manager for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

He helped create the Montana Tribal Tourism Alliance and The People's Partners for Community Development - both nonprofit, economic development organizations.

Charette's position will be filled after those recommended by Montana's seven tribes are interviewed, Schweitzer's office said.
