Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa members are preparing to celebrate the first International MetisFest at the International Peace Garden .

The event is set for Aug. 28-30 at the park that straddles the U.S.-Canada border north of Dunseith and signifies the peace between the two nations.

Organizer Les Thomas says the three-day event will include cultural workshops, craft booths, entertainers and various contests.

The Metis people were of Cree and French lineage. Descendants can be found in Minnesota, Manitoba and North Dakota, including members of the Turtle Mountain tribe.
