Three Affiliated Tribes chairman suggests 4-lane Highway 23

New Town, North Dakota (AP) 9-09

Three Affiliated Tribes Chairman Marcus Levings is proposing a four-lane road from North Dakota Highway 23 near Watford City to U.S. Highway 83 near Minot.

Levings said the area has had heavy traffic from oil and gas development.

Highway 23 has been the scene of recent traffic deaths. Authorities said two women were killed recently in Mountrail County when the car in which they were riding crossed the center line and collided head-on with a pickup traveling to an oil rig site.

State Transportation Department officials have not reduced the speed limit. But the agency is installing rumble stripes on a section of the highway from New Town to Plaza. Rumble stripes are pavement grooves with reflective paint to alert drivers when they start to leave the driving lane.
