Poupart awarded 2009 Virginia McKnight Binger Award for Human Service

Minneapolis, Minnesota (NFIC) 9-09

For 25 years, McKnight has given these human service awards to individuals who selflessly serve their communities. Candidates are nominated confidentially by those who believe in their work and recognize the difference they make.

In many cases, these folks have channeled insights gained through their own personal, dramatic struggles into help and support for others in need.

According to the McKnight Foundation press release John Poupart of West Saint Paul overcame chemical dependency and homelessness to receive a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University.

As facilitator of the Dakota Ojibwe Language Revitalization Alliance, John brought together American Indian elders, linguists, young people, public school staff, and others to develop one of the few statewide Indigenous language revitalization efforts in the United States.
