Effigy Mounds to be on quarters

Des Moines, Iowa (AP) 9-09

An design representing the Effigy Mounds National Monument will be one of the images stamped on the reverse side of quarters minted in the new “America the Beautiful” quarters program.

Starting in 2010, the U.S. Mint will issue 56 circulating quarters with reverse designs emblematic of a national park or other national site in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories. The front of the coins will have the image of George Washington.

In announcing the Indian burial mounds in Allamakee and Clayton counties were chosen to represent Iowa, Gov. Chet Culver said the site helps tell the story of the earliest Americans and is a fascinating area to explore, learn and discover.

The Effigy Mounds National Monument is near Marquette, along the banks of the Mississippi and Yellow rivers.
