Fort Berthold refinery opponents seek public vote

New Town, North Dakota (AP) 9-09

Opponents of a proposed oil refinery on the Fort Berthold Reservation say they plan to gather signatures to put the project to a vote.

Kandi Mossett of New Town said her group made that decision after Tribal Council members failed to authorize a public vote at a meeting during September.

Tribal Chairman Marcus Levings said he asked for a motion twice during the meeting but none was made. He said he supports the project but believes tribal members should have a say in it.

Mossett said her group, called the Environmental Awareness Committee, seeks a ballot measure that would let people vote for or against the refinery and indicate they want the tribe to pursue wind energy instead.

The proposed refinery near Makoti, in the reservation’s northeastern corner, would process pre-refined tar sand oil from Canada into fuel.
