Connecticut officials oppose tribal land bill

Ledyard, Connecticut (AP) 11-09

Town officials in Connecticut are urging Sens. Christopher Dodd and Joe Lieberman to oppose a bill that would allow the federal government to place land into trust for certain American Indian tribes.

Top officials in Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston sent a letter to the senators, saying they’re concerned about any future expansions by the two Connecticut tribes that operate casinos.

The bill by North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan would undo a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a Rhode Island case earlier this year that said the government can only place land into trust for tribes that were federally recognized before 1934.

The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, which run casinos in eastern Connecticut, were recognized within the past 30 years.
