Hearing addresses housing issues in Indian Country

Arizona Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is holding a congressional hearing in the Navajo Nation capital of Window Rock to discuss housing issues.

California Rep. Maxine Waters will join Kirkpatrick for Saturday’s hearing at the Navajo Nation Museum.

Kirkpatrick has sponsored legislation that would allow more disabled American Indian veterans and their families to receive housing assistance.

She says assistance currently is limited to families making less than 80 percent of the median income of their area. Compensation for veterans with service-related disabilities or for families of those killed in service also is treated as income.

Kirkpatrick’s bill would exclude disability and survivor compensation, which she says pushes many over the allowable limits.
