One hurt in fire at tribal treatment center in South Dakota

Rapid City, South Dakota April 2010

One person suffered burns to his arms and legs in a fire at a treatment center serving the Oglala Sioux tribe.

The fire at Sioux Sans Hospital’s Hope Lodge broke out about 1 p.m. Fire officials say 10 patients and one instructor were inside at the time.

The blaze moved quickly through the century-old building, one of the oldest on the hospital grounds. It houses a treatment program for substance abuse.

Fire officials say one patient tried to retrieve his belongings from the building and suffered minor burns to his arms and legs.

The Hope Lodge was destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
