Navajo woman to run for New Mexico commission

Gallup, New Mexico (AP) April 2010

A former Native American liaison for the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission has announced that she will run for the regulatory panel’s District 4 seat.

Theresa Becenti-Aguilar says its time to listen to voters and address leadership problems.

The District 4 seat is currently held by Carol Sloan, who was convicted this month of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary in a domestic violence case stemming from July 2009. Although she filed, Sloan is not eligible to run again due to the felony convictions.

Becenti-Aguilar will face Andrew Lopez of Albuquerque, Hank Hughes of Santa Fe and former Gallup Mayor George Galanis. Gary Montoya is the lone Republican in the District 4 race.

Becenti-Aguilar is planning a campaign rally Saturday afternoon at the Coyote Canyon Junction along U.S. 491.
