Wind River Reservation death spurs formation of girls’ group

A group of female students on the Wind River Reservation are banding together to work against violence against young women in the aftermath of the death of a teen girl on the reservation.

The students at Arapaho Charter High School call the group the “Young Ladies Circle.” They held their first meeting last week.

The students were motivated by the death of Marisa Spoonhunter this month. Authorities have charged two men in connection with her death.

Linda Heron, a counselor at Arapaho Charter, says the group will focus on helping girls make good choices regarding safety and sobriety and avoiding placing themselves at risk.

Student Whitney Ghostbear says the group wants to be a model for younger girls on the reservation.
