Navajo high court sets date to announce rulings

Window Rock, Arizona (AP) May 2010

The Navajo Nation Supreme Court says it will announce its rulings on two high-profile cases involving the tribal president later this month.

The announcements will mark the first time the high court justices will relay their decision to an audience, instead of simply issuing a written ruling.

The court has scheduled the announcements for May 28 at 10 a.m. at Window Rock High School in Fort Defiance.

One case centers on a December election in which Navajos voted to drastically reduce the size of the Tribal Council and give the president line-item veto authority. Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. led the ballot initiatives.

The other is an appeal of a decision to reinstate Shirley after tribal lawmakers voted to place him on leave.
