Feds give more benefits to Omak millworkers

Omak, Washington (AP) June 2010

The federal goverment is extending unemployment benefits for 350 laid-off millworkers in Omak.

The Wenatchee World reports that the Labor Department approved a request from the Colville Tribal Enterprise Corp. on behalf of the workers, who were laid off at two lumber and plywood mills.

One mill was closed in January 2009, and the other closed last November.

Corporation chief executive Joe Pakootas says added benefits for the millworkers will include extended unemployment, and opportunities to train for jobs in new fields or attend school to learn a new profession.
