Tribal elder dies after falling in Rapid River

Lewiston, Idaho (AP) July 2010

A Nez Perce elder from Orofino has passed away after reportedly falling in the Rapid River while he was fishing.

Idaho County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Johnny Wilson says Ralph Cecil Johnson was fishing at a popular spot near the confluence of the Little Salmon River on June 29 when he fell in. The current carried the fisherman about a quarter-mile downstream before other fishermen were able to pull him ashore.

Johnson was pronounced dead when sheriff’s deputies arrived.

The tribe’s fish and wildlife commission has approved a 24-hour closure of the Rapid River to tribal fisherman out of respect for Johnson and his family.
