Feds approve snowmaking plan for Arizona ski resort

Flagstaff, Arizona (AP) July 2010

The federal government has approved a proposal to swap reclaimed wastewater for more expensive drinking-quality water to make snow at a northern Arizona resort.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week approved a permit for the Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff. It allows the ski resort to make snow using reclaimed water that has percolated back into the ground.

The plan still must be approved by the Flagstaff Water Commission and the City Council.

The concept is part of an attempt to broker a compromise between the ski resort and several Native American tribes. The tribes oppose the use of reclaimed wastewater on the San Francisco Peaks, which they consider sacred.
