Pima-Maricip community wins $64,000 highway safety grant

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) August 2010

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community won a $64,000 grant from the state of Arizona to pay for two new motorcycles to be used on traffic patrols.

The grant by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety was awarded because of the community’s increase in traffic citations and drunken driving arrests.

Alberto Gutier, who leads the governor’s highway safety office, says the community’s police department won the grant because it has outperformed most large cities in Arizona in their traffic and drunken driving enforcement.
