The city of Glendale has filed a lawsuit challenging a decision by the federal government to add land to the reservation of a southern Arizona Indian tribe.

The tribe wants to build a casino on 54 acres of unincorporated land surrounded on three sides by Glendale.

The city opposes the project and filed its challenge in federal court recently in Phoenix.

Glendale argues that the U.S. Interior Department erred in accepting an application by the Tohono O’odham tribe to take land into trust. The department’s decision clears a key hurdle for the planned casino.

An Interior Department spokeswoman has said the department doesn’t comment on pending lawsuits.
