Farmington, New Mexico (AP) November 2010
Farmington city councilors have approved a resolution in support of a lease renewal between the Navajo Nation and the Four Corners Power Plant.
Mayor Tommy Roberts broke a tie last week over the resolution, which backs approval of a 25-year lease between the tribe and Arizona Public Service Company, which operates the coal-fired plant.
Two Farmington councilors voted against the resolution because they had not seen the lease.
One of them, Jason Sandel, says he would have backed a resolution supporting the plant, without mentioning the lease.
Roberts says the city is recognizing the strong ties Farmington and San Juan County have to the Navajo Nation and the power plant.
The resolution notes the plant and nearby coal mine employ hundreds of people and pump money into the economy.
