Seneca Indian Nation to pursue hydropower license

Salamanca, New York (AP) December 2010

The Seneca Indian Nation plans to pursue a license for a Pennsylvania hydropower operation when the current operator’s 50-year license expires in 2015.

Seneca President Robert Odawi Porter says the nation has started the application process for the license to operate the Seneca Pumped Storage Project at Kinzua Dam on the Allegheny River. The nation is also looking for an experienced partner to operate the facility.

Right now, the license to operate the Warren County, Pa., hydroelectric plant is held by FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron, Ohio.

The plant’s location at the Kinzua Dam recalls a painful part of the Senecas’ past. The U.S. government used eminent domain to take 10,000 acres of the Senecas’ Allegany Reservation so the dam could be built to control river flooding.
