Herseth Sandlin picked for tribal commission

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (AP) December 2010

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin will serve on a national commission that will study tribal criminal justice systems.

The outgoing South Dakota representative says that Native American families deserve to raise their children in a safe and secure environment.  Herseth Sandlin says she hopes the Indian Law and Order Commission, created by the Tribal Law and Order Act, will continue to help move the country in the right direction.

The commission will study jurisdiction issues with crimes in Indian Country, tribal jail and federal prisons systems for adults and juveniles and the Indian Civil Rights Act’s impact on tribal authority.
