BIA could intervene in Oklahoma tribal squabble

Concho, Oklahoma (AP) January 2011

Bureau of Indian Affairs officials could intervene in a squabble between leaders of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.

The tribes' governor, Janice Boswell, is embroiled in a dispute with the lieutenant governor, Leslie Wandrie-Harjo. A tribal court has ordered that Boswell be suspended from her office and placed Wandrie-Harjo in charge of the executive branch, but a spokeswoman for Boswell tells The Oklahoman the court order was not legal and that Boswell is conducting business as usual.

The tribes' supreme court issued an order last week removing the judge who issued the order against Boswell from his office.

BIA special agent Mike McCoy says a meeting is planned with both sides Wednesday and says the agency will intervene “if there are any violations of the law.”
