Ho-Chunk Nation fights state over poker tables

Madison, Wisconsin (AP) January 2011

State regulators and the Ho-Chunk Nation are fighting over the use of electronic poker tables at the tribe’s Dejope bingo hall in Madison.

The state says the poker games are prohibited under law because they are much like blackjack or slots. But, the Ho-Chunk say the games are legal because players bet against each other, rather than the house or the machine as in traditional poker.

At issue is whether the electronic poker tables are “class three” games, which are banned at bingo halls, but not casinos. The State Journal says the tribe and state have agreed to settle the dispute through binding arbitration.
