Glendale-area casino now opposed by another tribe

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) March 2011

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has come out in opposition to another tribe’s proposed casino in the Glendale area.

The Tohono O’odham Nation wants to build a casino and resort at 95th and Northern avenues near Glendale’s sports district.

Glendale officials, the Gila River Indian Community and others are challenging federal approval to put the Tohono O’odham’s land into the reservation system, a precursor to gaming.

The Arizona Republic says a federal judge’s ruling on the casino is expected soon.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa tribe released a four-page letter last week spelling out reasons for its opposition.

The letter says the proposed casino would decrease Salt River Pima-Maricopa’s casino business in Scottsdale by at least 16 percent.

They are the eighth Arizona tribe so far to officially oppose the casino.
