Both Okla. senators oppose federal judge nominee

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (AP) March 2011

Both U.S. senators from Oklahoma say they’re opposed to President Barack Obama’s nomination to the federal bench of a former federal prosecutor from Norman.

Arvo Mikkanen, a member of the Kiowa Tribe, was nominated by the Democratic president Feb. 2 to become a U.S. district judge in Oklahoma.

But the Oklahoman newspaper reported last week that Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe, both R-Okla., say they were not consulted about the nomination of the 49-year-old Mikkanen, and say he is unacceptable. Coburn and Inhofe said his nomination should be withdrawn.

Opposition by home-state senators is usually a major barrier to Senate confirmation of a judicial nominee.
