Minnesota tribal groups rally against gambling bills

By Patrick Condon
St. Paul, Minnesota May 2011

A large crowd of tribal casino employees and their supporters gathered in pouring rain outside the Capitol to demand that state lawmakers not expand gambling beyond Indian reservations.

The Minnesota Indian Gaming Association organized the rally in response to several proposals in the Legislature to let horse tracks and bars and restaurants add slot machines and other betting games.

Tribal casinos supporters say that would create few new customers for gaming and instead shuffle money away from existing tribal outlets. They say communities near casinos would lose good-paying jobs.

A State Patrol officer estimated the crowd at the rally exceeded 1,000 people. Several lawmakers unveiled a proposal to let bars and restaurants add video slot machines, electronic bingo and electronic pull-tabs.
