South Dakota school ends contracts with all employees

Rapid City, South Dakota (AP) May 2011

All employees at the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee have been notified they will be out of a job at the end of the school year.

The school board recently decided not to renew contracts with the more than 90 employees, from the superintendent to bus drivers. The entire staff will have to re-apply for their jobs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

School board chairman John Haas tells the Rapid City Journal that the school board’s decision does not target any person or group. He says the board is trying to create a school that meets students’ needs by teaching reading, writing and math.

The school has struggled for years to meet the requirements of the federal school improvement law known as No Child Left Behind.
