Injunction blocks changes in Arizona casino dispute

Phoenix, Arizona (AP) May 2011

A judge says the legal landscape in a dispute over a southern Arizona Indian tribe’s casino-project planned in the Phoenix area will remain the same pending a ruling by an appeals court.

An order issued by U.S. District Judge David Campbell bars the city of Glendale from annexing the site of the planned project of the Tohono (toh-HO’-noh) O’odham Nation. It also bars the U.S. Department of Interior from acquiring the 54-acre site in trust for the tribe.

Glendale is among entities and individuals challenging the tribe’s project.

Campbell in March ruled in favor of the tribe, but the challengers are appealing his ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Campbell’s order on an injunction takes effect once the challengers post a $500,000 bond.
