NM college to offer degree in Navajo culture

Crownpoint, New Mexico (AP) October 2012

Navajo Technical College has been given approval to start offering a new degree in Navajo culture.

The Gallup Independent reports (http://bit.ly/z0cIwR) that the Institution Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission recently gave the OK for the Crownpoint, N.M. college to offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dine Culture, Language and Leadership.

The school said the four-year degree program will include 96 credit hours in Navajo specific courses.

The new degree comes after NTC Director of Dine Studies Wesley Thomas started developing the idea in 1988.

Thomas also plans to develop a master’s program for Dine Culture, Language and Leadership, and doctorate degrees in Dine Language and Indigenous Education.
