Interior Department rejects Turtle Mountain casino application

Washington, D.C. (AP) 1-08

The Interior Department has rejected an application by North Dakota’s Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa to build a casino off the reservation near Grand Forks.

The department said the tribe’s application, submitted in March 2006, was incomplete so it will be removed from consideration.

Bill Johnson, a member of the tribe who has advocated for the casino, said tribal leaders are still fighting for the casino and will submit the necessary paperwork.

The proposal has been controversial. Johnson and other supporters say the tribe needs the economic boost it would provide. But some Grand Forks residents say it would be bad for the community.

The tribe’s proposal would put 40 acres south of Grand Forks into trust status, giving the tribe jurisdiction of the land.
