Romulus casino plan in Michigan rejected; tribe may still pursue complex

Romulus, Michigan (AP) 1-08

The federal government has rejected an American Indian tribe’s request to develop an off-reservation casino near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs says the complex is too far from the Hannahville Indian Community’s base in Escanaba and would hurt reservation life.

A tribe spokesman tells The Detroit News that the proposal isn’t dead. He says the tribe’s options include asking for reconsideration or filing a lawsuit.

Romulus voters passed a referendum in 2003 supporting a casino.

The casino would have employed 3,300 workers and included a 200-room hotel, 2,400 slot machines, 90 table games, restaurants and shops.
