School of Law professor appointed director of AIS institute

Vermillion, South Dakota (AP) 1-08

An assistant professor at the University of South Dakota law school has been named director of the school’s Institute of American Indian Studies.

Patrice H. Kunesh has represented tribes throughout the country, including work at the Native American Rights Fund, USD said in a release.

“Indian education is a high priority area in the university and law school strategic plans,” said Barry R. Vickrey, law school dean. “Strong leadership of both the department and the institute will help bring more American Indian students to this campus. For those who might be interested in pursuing legal education, Professor Kunesh will be in an excellent position to inform them about our strong program.”

Kunesh has written articles and gives lectures about the state of Indian child welfare as well as tribal and federal Indian law.

The Legislature created the Institute of American Indian Studies in 1955 to give people of Indian descent educational opportunities both on and off the USD campus and provide opportunities to research and study the history, culture and language of the Indians of North America and South Dakota, the release said.
