Neuharth Media Center director gets USD award 5-12-07

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - The executive director of the Al Neuharth
Media Center at the University of South Dakota, Jack Marsh, will
receive the 2007 John R. Williams Award, given by the Native American
Recruitment and Retention Committee, USD said in a release.

The award goes to an individual, staff or program in recognition of
significant contributions to American Indian students at USD.

In 2001, Marsh founded the American Indian Journalism Institute,
which gives Indian college students nationwide a chance to study
journalism on the USD campus. Through the institute, Marsh has
introduced 142 Indian students to journalism. Sixty-two worked in
paid newsroom internships and about 20 now work as professional
journalists.

Marsh, the Freedom Forum's vice president for diversity programs,
also helps organize the Native American Journalism Career Conference
at Crazy Horse Memorial. At that conference, Indian students from
high schools, tribal colleges and universities are introduced to
careers in journalism.

The award, to be presented in June, honors John R. Williams, who grew
up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, earned a doctorate in
education from USD and developed, directed and taught in the Alcohol
and Drug Abuse Studies Department from 1973 until his death in 2001.
