New president appointed for Institute of American Indian Arts 5-18-07

SANTA FE (AP) - A new president has been selected for the Institute of American Indian Arts, which has been led by an interim president for more than a year.

Robert Martin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, was chosen Thursday. His appointment takes effect July 1.

He has been a faculty member and associate head of the American Indian studies programs at the University of Arizona, where he has worked since 1999.

Martin said he was excited about his selection and that he wants to work on increasing public and private funding for the IAIA.

Della Warrior resigned as IAIA president in January 2006 after eight years at the helm.

Cassandra Manuelito-Kerkvliet was hired in April 2006 to replace Warrior, effective last July 1. But Manuelito-Kerkvliet decided last June that she did not want the job.

Richard Tobin has been interim president since Warrior's resignation.

Martin was president of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan., from 1989-1999, and was president of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque from 1981-1989.

He was president of Tohono O'odham Community College at Sells, Ariz., from 2001-2005.
