State to put up signs warning motorists of crossing elk

Lansing, Michigan (AP) 9-07

Elk crossing signs are going up along Interstate 75 in northern Michigan to warn motorists to watch out for the hefty creatures.

Twenty-six collisions between elk and motorists have occurred statewide in the past five years. The Department of Natural Resources is warning that elk can cause significant damage because they’re larger than deer, with males weighing more than 700 pounds.

The signs will go up along the highway between Gaylord and Indian River. The heavily wooded section stretches from 30 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge connecting the upper and lower peninsulas to about 60 miles south.

Posters in rest areas also will warn motorists to be alert.
