Idaho, Nevada reservoir trout found with elevated mercury levels

Boise, Idaho (AP) 12-07

Idaho health officials are urging anglers at southern Idaho and northern Nevada reservoirs to limit their consumption of rainbow trout after a federal study found elevated levels of mercury.

Higher-than-normal mercury levels were documented in rainbow trout caught in Lake Billy Shaw, Sheep Creek Reservoir and Mountain View Reservoir on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, as well as the Wildhorse Reservoir nearby.

Scientists already have documented mercury contamination elsewhere in the region, including brown trout from central Idaho’s famed Silver Creek.

In particular, pregnant women and children are advised to limit their consumption of trout caught at the reservoirs.

Environmental groups believe much of the mercury is borne on the wind from gold mines in northern Nevada.
