Wisconsin sets bag limits as spearfishing begins

Madison, Wisconsin (AP) 4-09

Wisconsin wildlife officials have set up new daily walleye bag limits for anglers as American Indian spearfishing begins.

The Department of Natural Resources has revised limits on 418 lakes in the Wisconsin Ceded Territory. The rules include a three-walleye limit on 87 lakes, a two-walleye limit on 324 lakes and one walleye on seven lakes.

Six bands of Wisconsin Chippewa set annual spearfishing harvest quotas. The DNR adjusts bag limits for lakes the Chippewa have declared for harvest.

The idea is to make sure the combined tribal and recreational take doesn’t jeopardize the walleye population in any lake.

Lake-by-lake bag limits are available on the DNR’s fishing Web site.
